CONSULTANT GERIATRICIAN & GENERAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN

Geriatric care: guided by dignity, warmth and wisdom.

Dr Saad B Ahmed is a Senior Geriatrician and General Medicine Physician with extensive experience in the care of older adults with complex medical, cognitive and functional needs.

He graduated from the University of Peshawar in 2003 before undertaking further medical training in the United Kingdom, where he received Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, London. After moving to Australia in 2008, Dr Ahmed completed advanced specialist training across St Vincent’s Health, Monash Health and Ballarat Health, with a focus on Geriatric Medicine, General Medicine and the care of medically complex older patients. He has also undertaken further training in palliative care medicine and pain management at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Dr Ahmed is deeply committed to a thoughtful and holistic approach to ageing. His work is guided by respect for the person behind the illness; their life story, values, relationships, culture, preferences and sense of dignity. He understands that ageing can bring not only physical health challenges, but also emotional, psychological and relational changes for patients and their families.

Known for his calm, kind and approachable manner, Dr Ahmed takes time to listen carefully and understand what matters most to each person. He is punctual, diligent and highly dependable, with the care of elderly patients forming a central tenet of his clinical practice. He takes this responsibility seriously and brings consistency, steadiness and genuine commitment to the patients, families and care teams he works with.

Dr Ahmed provides comprehensive physical and geriatric assessments, including assessment of frailty, mobility, falls risk, cognition, function, medication burden and overall medical complexity. He also assists with capacity assessments, driving assessments and other sensitive decisions that can arise when an older person’s independence, safety and autonomy need to be carefully considered.

He works closely with families, GPs, hospitals, nursing homes, nurse practitioners and allied health teams to support continuity of care across acute hospital settings, rehabilitation services, residential aged care and the community. Families are seen as a central part of the care journey, alongside the older person. Dr Ahmed recognises that loved ones often carry the emotional and practical weight of complex decisions, and he is committed to supporting them with clarity, compassion and sound clinical guidance.

Dr Ahmed has a particular interest in walking alongside older adults and their families as they navigate complex decisions around memory loss, frailty, falls, pain, functional decline, capacity, driving, future care planning and end-of-life preferences. He is passionate about preserving the autonomy of older people wherever possible, ensuring that their wishes remain central to medical decision-making.

At South Eastern Specialist Centre, Dr Ahmed supports a collaborative geriatric care model, including clinic consultations and nursing home reviews. His focus is on creating practical, individualised care plans that promote comfort, safety, independence, dignity and quality of life.

Outside medicine, Dr Ahmed has a deep connection with nature. He finds meaning in mountains, open landscapes and the quiet restorative beauty of the natural world. This groundedness is reflected in the warmth, steadiness and humanity he brings to his clinical care.

Dr Ahmed is fluent in English, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Pashto, allowing him to provide culturally sensitive care to patients and families from diverse backgrounds.
